Our Story

Poderi Arcangelo

Hi everyone, I'm Sandra Mora and this is the story of how my organic farm and farmhouse Poderi Arcangelo in San Gimignano was born. My grandfather Giuseppe emigrated to Tuscany from the Marche at the beginning of the last century with the hope of finally being able to realize his dream: to have the opportunity to become the owner of a land that he had always worked and loved and thanks to which he was able to feed his large family. With the savings of a life, he buys a portion of an old house in La Buca in San Gimignano with just one hectare of uncultivated land. He has to give a name to the small farm he is creating and the inspiration comes from seeing an old stone slab right above the front door of the house that bears the words "Archangel - 1895". Thus was born the "Podere dell 'Arcangelo" farm. Years pass and Giuseppe decides that one hectare is too little for his family. Soon he rents and then buys some vineyards around the house, which he starts caring for with his son Bruno, my father. Bruno soon became passionate about the life of a winemaker and decides that the production of wine and oil will be the business of the family. The hectares increase as well as the wine production, which needs more space than the small cellar of the paternal house. He then decides to buy, together with his wife Maria, my mother, a farmhouse just above the hill, which has land with both vineyards and olive groves. The renovated farmhouse will house not only the cellar but also our home, but it is too big for our family. Bruno then decides to rent some of the rooms of the farmhouse thus also starting to be a farmhouse, where guests can stay and live in close contact the daily life of the countryside in Tuscany. Thus Villa Arcangelo was born. Bruno is therefore a man of the vineyard and cellar, while Maria takes care of the management of the house and of the guests. The vineyards he cultivates are Vernaccia di San Gimignano and Sangiovese for Chianti, but soon he will also plant Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Colorino and other vines for the production of his wines. Since the quality produced was really excellent, he decided to start bottling the production. It is the year 1993. In the cellar we still keep some bottles of each vintage of each of our wines and you will also find some bottles of the first bottling. I suggest you show it to you during one of our wine tasting sessions with a visit to the cellar and a walk through the vineyards. The land and the farmhouses, however, seem not to be enough. Bruno decides to buy two old abandoned farmhouses, whose lands planted with vineyards and olive groves border his own. With great courage he decides to make this important investment, also supported by me, his daughter Sandra; to date I deal entirely with the company. The renovation of the two farmhouses is an important job but above all careful to maintain the rustic Tuscan style and the atmosphere of a country cottage. Together with Villa Arcangelo, Casa San Raffaello is now also born, consisting mainly of apartments, and Casa Capezzano with elegant rooms in a rustic Tuscan style. The latter will become the main farmhouse, where my whole family goes to live and where the reception, the room for the sale of farm products and the restaurant are located. A panoramic swimming pool is built in each farmhouse, for the exclusive use of the housed guests, with a wonderful view of the Tuscan countryside and the medieval towers of San Gimignano. Thus was born the Poderi Arcangelo farm, with its 3 farmhouses and 40 hectares of land, 25 of which are vineyards and 1500 olive trees of Tuscan varieties. Based on the desire to grow and improve inherited from my father, I decide that the farm must become one of the first companies in the area to start organic production. The process that began in the distant 2000, today sees the entire production of wine and oil in organic farming. TODAY at Poderi Arcangelo we produce Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG, our latest PerBruno, reserve in terracotta amphora. Chianti Riserva DOCG, Rosé from Merlot grapes, Extra dry Spumante from Vernaccia grapes, IGT Toscano Barrique and Extra virgin olive oil complete the range of our organic wines. Guests of our farmhouse can choose to stay in a room with breakfast or half board, or in independent apartments with equipped kitchens. They can dine on the panoramic terrace of our restaurant with a typical Tuscan menu accompanied by our organic wines and choose one of the activities we offer: typical Tuscan home cooking courses, guided tastings of wine and oil of our production, visits to cellars and vineyard tours . The familiar cordiality and authenticity of Tuscan country life awaits you for a real holiday and an experience you will not forget ... I give you my word. With love Sandra Mora

Our team

My name’s Sandra, commercial manager of Poderi Arcangelo, Holiday Farm and Organic Farm in San Gimignano and next to me my mother Maria who is in charge of the restaurant and the kitchen. Our family-run business was founded by my grandfather Giuseppe and then expanded by my father Bruno, who was the real handyman: but above all he was a man at home in the vineyard and the cellar! Today I’m in charge of the company and especially the commercial aspect, while trying to pass everything on to my children Alberto and Alice … hopefully future managers of the holiday farm! Our accommodation is divided into three Farmhouses and a Bio Barn each with its own swimming pool, garden and private parking and all within 500 metres from this beautiful hill 8 km from San Gimignano and 3 from Certaldo. We were among the first in San Gimignano to open up our house to guests with a passion for the Tuscan countryside and in 1993, after 2 years of renovation, the casa Arcangelo, an old farmhouse, which was uninhabited for many years was transformed into a guest house with 9 en-suite bedrooms, a large living room with fireplace, a kitchen on the ground floor with a veranda and our first cellar for the production of Chianti wine. In 2002 we opened Casa San Raffaello, divided into eight apartments for 2 to 6 people each, with plenty of outdoor space for children, a view of San Gimignano and a swimming pool. Now we are in Casa Capezzano which was opened in 2004 after 2 years spent on the painstaking renovation of 19 rooms all with bathrooms, some with bio-ecological architecture, our Restaurant, the Reception and a space for the sale of our products such as Chianti wine, vernaccia, different types of IGT wines aged in barrels, extra virgin olive oil, vinsanto, grappa, jams, honey and other typical products all produced exclusively from organic farming. Next to Casa Capezzano is the Bio Barn, which has been renovated in accordance with bio-eco architecture principles. An organic farm could not embark on a building renovation without taking into account the parameters dictated by bio-eco architecture. Bearing in mind that all the buildings have been renovated favouring the use of local techniques and materials, in the barn we have tried to use all the additional solutions that architects specialised in this sector have made available to us, with soil and magnetic interference measurements. In the barn, every single detail has been meticulously taken in account, starting with the exclusive use of natural materials, both for the renovation and the furnishing, with the use of all the technical solutions available. For example, a bio-cleanergy system has been used that works like a large magnet to prevent the formation of natural magnetic fields, while a bioswitch in each room prevents those generated by the electrical system, so that when we go to sleep and the electricity is not being used, the entire system is automatically deactivated, removing any magnetic fields from the environment. You will feel like you are sleeping in an open field. Everything here is strictly natural.
