Our Story

AMA - Abanya-Rwenzori Mountaineering Association

For the past 30 years, the Abanya-Rwenzori Mountaineering Association (AMA) has been dedicated to showcasing the breathtaking beauty of the Rwenzori Mountains. Known as Africa's surreal "Mountains of the Moon," this majestic range offers visitors a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in cultural experiences while exploring its stunning landscapes. The Abanya-Rwenzori is the word meaning the people of Rwenzori, who have lived in the mountains for centuries, are your guides. Their intimate knowledge of the land and its history enriches your experience as you engage with their vibrant traditions and customs. Our community tourism organization provides affordable and tailored experiences, from short half-day village tours to multi-day camping expeditions. Our Vision Our vision is to promote the biodiversity of Rwenzori Mountains National Park while emphasizing social inclusiveness, sustainable development, and environmental conservation. Our Mission Our mission is to enhance the economic benefits derived from tourism and development partners, ensuring that these resources contribute to environmental conservation and the well-being of local communities adjacent to the Rwenzori Mountains National Park. #Rwenzori #Uganda #EcoTourism #NatureWalk Here is a testimonial from one of our clients regarding their visit with AMA: My partner and I did a 3-day backpacking and camping trek to Karangura Peak with the Abanya-Rwenzori Mountaineering Association (AMA) in the Northern Rwenzori Mountains. The AMA organization and our trekking guides were all local Bakonzo people, and they made us feel safe and welcome traveling through their community and homeland. The mountain villages and rainforest were extremely lush, green, and beautiful. Our guides taught us about medicinal herbs, traditions, and beliefs surrounding the mountains. Every morning and night they cooked us delicious meals over the campfire. We would definitely recommend the AMA for anyone looking for a tour company in the Rwenzori Mountains—not only because they offer a much better price and value than other tour companies, but especially because they are totally organized by the local community, and the proceeds support the local schools. We would only advise that any tourists wishing to do bush trekking be physically fit for hiking up steep mountain trails, bring their own rainproof camping gear, and be prepared to use local transportation and travel in very rural areas. The AMA guides were very accommodating and will take good care of you! Jonathan and Joy April 2025
