Our Story
The Melker Stiftskeller is part of the Melkerhof in Vienna's Schottengasse 3 in the first district. A certificate from 1629 proves that there was a wine-cellar connected with the Melkerhof already at that time. In addition it confirms the right of the Abbey of Melk to store and sell wine from the abbey's vineyards. That certificate makes the Melker Stiftskeller the oldest cellar vault restaurant in Vienna. Today the restaurant is still owned by the Benedictine monks of Melk, but they outsourcing the daily business. The Melker Stiftskellers fine cuisine developed out of this wine-cellar. Today we concentrate on traditional and fresh food, our specialty of the house, the roasted pork knuckle, is served for almost 400 years now. The old cellar vault offers seating for 280 persons in 7 rooms with different capacities. Therefore the Melker Stiftskeller is perfect for larger groups, private parties and business events.
