Friends of Usambara Cultural Tourism Enterprise Ltd
FoU’s Unique Business Model Since its establishment, FoU’s operational (business) model has evolved over time owing to the sprawling nature of the operating environment (including the funding landscape). Motivated by its mandate and the need to deliver to its target beneficiaries (largely the marginalized and poor communities) despite the noted difficulties, FoU created a program that would, by design, help to sustain the work of the society by leveraging and creating resources (income generation) from the by then ‘locked’ tourism sector. The whole move was geared at unlocking the potential held by the tourism sector particularly the cultural tourism aspect i.e. making (cultural) tourism work for the poor people by linking (cultural) tourism development to poverty alleviation and sustainable environmental conservation. These are the circumstances which lead to the establishment of FoU Cultural Tourism Enterprise as an appendage or rather an outgrowth (from FoU Society) aimed at generating income from the tourism sector to support the work of the society. Thanks to this model as the society has apparently been able to thrive and continue with its work even at times when there has been no external support!
