Our Story
Built in 1969, it is located in Tsavo West National Park, the home of the Big5. It can be accessed from Nairobi (260 km away), through Mtito Andei Gate or from Mombasa (250km away) through Tsavo River Gate. The Lodge is perched on the Ndawe Escarpment just below Ngulia Hills, overlooking the Rhino Sanctuary surrounded by Scenic Hills. Ngulia Safari Lodge has one of the most breathtaking views in Kenya. It has the best game viewing in all directions; from the rooms, to the restaurant and a massive binoculars overlooking the Rhino Sanctuary. The watering hole has an almost permanent population of elephants, buffalos, not to mention a leopard bait exclusive to Ngulia Safari Lodge. The rustic look of the lodge, delicious meals and the serene atmosphere makes the lodge ideal for a quiet getaway. - 52 standard rooms, all with bath and shower and a balcony with a view of the vast wilderness and floodlit water holes. - A main restaurants built in an open-air style, has a view of floodlit water holes. All meals are served buffet style. Optional arrangements can be made for Bush breakfast, Sundowner dinners and picnic lunch boxes. - A Leopard view bar open in the evenings before the arrival of the leopard from the wilderness. Guests can enjoy their meals as they watch the leopard feast, other animals drink water and make love, and the birds compete in their melodies with access to a giant binoculars overlooking the Rhino sanctuary. The journey to the Lodge is itself a game drive; - Mzima Springs replenished with two hundred and twenty million liters of crystal-clear water every day. It comes from the underground streams flowing from the nearby Chyulu Hills. Mzima in Swahili means ‘Life’. It attracts rich wildlife including elephants, hippos, crocodiles, gazelles, zebras and giraffes wandering around the banks through the thick acacias and raffia palms together with a large number of monkeys and birds. Mzima is also the main source of Mombasa's city water supply. There are well-marked nature trails, an observation platform and an underwater glass tank - - Hippo Point (Inhabited with hippos and crocodiles). - Shetani Caves - Shetani means ‘devil’ in Kiswahili. When the locals first saw ‘fire’ erupting and ‘flowing’ on the ground some 500 years ago, they believed that it was the devil himself emerging from the earth. The Shetani black lava flow is 8 km long, 1.6 km wide and 5 meters deep. The sight is quite special and spectacular. - Chaimu volcanic crater and lava field – The road color changes from red to black as you get closer to Chaimu. Chaimu crater, or “the devil's crater” in Kamba tribe language, is a tall rising hill clad in the bright black colour of the lava stones. You can climb this recent volcano as there is a path leading to the top. Climbing the hill is not easy as it is not stable and can be slippery. - Five sister’s hills - One more volcanic feature of Tsavo West is ‘Five Sisters,’ the five almost identical cone-shaped hills located in one area and resembling one another. The scenery is stunning – a low ridge of black lava outcrop, long luscious grass and conical hills that make the Five Sisters. - Kichwa Tembo. - Roaring Rocks among others. - Animals - Tsavo West offers magnificent game viewing. Thick vegetation makes it more difficult compared to more open parks, for example, the Masai Mara, but with some patience, one can see some of the big five along with a wide range of antelope species, hippos, and spectacular birdlife. In addition to adventurous game drives, the following activities are offered at the lodge: - Full board Conferencing services with a capacity of 25-30pax complete with conferencing material, PA System and LCD Projector. - Recreational activities - Swimming pool, Japanese/American Massage services, team building activities, guided nature walks and hill climbing. - Entertainment - Family friendly activities organized by an in-house animation team for to include traditional dancers, acrobatic shows, Live band, Bingo games etc. - As the Lodge is situated directly in the path of the bird migration, every year since 1969 in the months of October, November and December the facility hosts bird ringers & watchers’ enthusiasts.
