Due to our variety of accommodation we are often visited by backpackers, campers, solo-travellers, bikers, adventurers, horse riders, hikers and both large and small families.
The best way to experience the Drakensberg is definitely on horseback! We're the largest horse trail specialist in the area and with our well-trained Basotho ponies the experience is awesome for all levels from first time to jockey. If you'd rather stay on foot we also offer full and half-day guided hikes, although you're welcome to explore the super safe walking and cycling trails past waterfalls and rivers unguided. For the water-babies we also offer tubing down the crystal clear Umzimkulu river in the Summer. If hiking, riding, cycling or tubing aren't your game there's always a fireplace nearby to kick back with a beer and enjoy the mountains.
Our Story
Welcome to Khotso! Nestled at the heart of our 1000 hectare working farm, just outside of Underberg, in the foothills of the majestic Southern Drakensberg, Khotso is the perfect base for adventure, or simply to relax and unwind in nature. Accommodation at Khotso Lodge: In keeping with our surroundings, we provide rustic, homely, and clean farm style accommodation, whether you’re looking for self-catering accommodation in our cosy Rondavels, a room in our lodge, or a tranquil grass-covered campsite to pitch your tent or park your overlander – Khotso has something for everyone. Rondavels: Our rondavels are perfect for couples or families. Each rondavel offers one double bed bedroom, with 3 single beds on a separate floor. Downstairs includes an open plan kitchen and seating area looking onto an internal fireplace and a bathroom with toilet and shower. Outside there’s a braai area, a decked balcony, and beautiful views across the farm! Log Cabin: The Log Cabin sleeps 22, and is perfect for large groups. Featuring an expansive open-plan downstairs living area, complete with a full kitchen, a dining area and comfy seating area positioned around a fireplace for those chilly winter nights. There are 4 dorm–style rooms upstairs and 1 twin room, with 22 beds in total. Downstairs are two bathrooms with toilets and showers, as well as a heated outside shower for the brave, or naturally inclined! There’s also a large standing braai area and a wide deck to the front of the building for cooking under the stars, watching the mountains, and relaxing with a beer as the sun goes down. Lodge: Our homely Lodge allows guests to both experience the community at Khotso, as well as enjoy the rolling hills and quiet gardens. Private rooms, with a communal kitchen and lounge make the lodge the perfect place to meet new people and still have the space to enjoy Khotso at your own pace. With an outside braai area for bonfires and marshmallows, a communal kitchen warmed by our vintage Aga stove and a spacious, but homely, lounge area set around an internal stone fireplace, the lodge is where people come together and share stories of the day's adventures. En Suite: Nestled in each wing of the Backpackers Lodge, the en suite rooms offer the comfort of your own shower room and views over the garden. It’s close enough to the action, but offers the privacy of your own bathroom and the comfort of double beds with heated blankets. Twin: With 2 single beds and a desk, the twin room makes use of the communal bathrooms,, with easy access to the kitchen and the relaxed seating and dining area, with pleasant views over the garden. Double: With views over the garden out onto the mountain, our double room gets bathed in morning light as the sun rises over the farm. Sharing the communal facilities, the comfortable double room offers a little more privacy, and has easy access to the kitchen and the relaxed seating and dining area as well. This room is ideal for couples, or spoiling yourself after a long hike with your own double bed room, with a heated blanket! Dorm: The gold standard of backpacking - tried and tested. Meet other travellers without breaking the bank and enjoy the lively community at the Backpackers Lodge. Camping & Overlanders: Our campsite is hugely popular with campers and overlanders from across the country, and the world! Situated next to a bubbling natural stream, with lots of shaded pitches, our campsite offers a fully equipped kitchen, both communal and individual braai pits, and electricity for those that need it, as well as excellent ablutions facilities. On those days when the weather just won’t play ball, campers are welcome to use the shared lounge and Wi-Fi at the adjacent lodge. Khotso Horse trails In The Southern Drakensberg: While there’s plenty of hiking and cycling from the farm, truly the best way to experience Khotso is from the back of a horse! We’re the oldest and largest horse trails specialists in the area, with almost 20 years experience. Open all year round, our horse trails all start from the Khotso Lodge and criss-cross over 1,000 hectares of rolling farmland Khotso land. Eland’s Peak sits at 1,800m above sea level, whilst 5km of the beautiful Umzimkulu River flows through the farm as well. On the farm, we offer rides for anything from 1 hour, to a full day experience, as well as breath taking sunset rides each evening. Rides are tailored to your ability, so everyone from absolute beginners to experienced riders can saddle up and experience everything Khotso has to offer, from a short one hour ride, to longer rides taking in waterfalls, pine forests and golden-hour sunsets from the back of one of our well trained Basotho ponies. For those with more time, we also offer multi-day, cross border expeditions into the untouched wilds of Lesotho. A truly incredible experience - ride with us up steep mountain passes, across expansive wild plains, through deep gorges adorned with ancient bushman paintings. We'll stay overnight at our rustic lodge, in the heart of a remote Basotho village, where we can relax by the fire, enjoy hearty home cooked food, hot Basotho bread, and a glass of wine by the fire, before saddling up and doing it all again tomorrow! Let our experienced team saddle up and guide you out to panoramic views across the Drakensberg, and the sense of freedom and adventure that only comes from experiencing nature from the back of a horse.
